Blackwall Hitch Pays Tribute to PBS’ MERCY STREET Series with Special Cocktails
With the premiere of PBS’s Mercy Street on Sunday January 17, the Old Town Alexandria waterfront restaurant Blackwall Hitch will pay homage to its historic neighborhood with three classic cocktails from the Civil War era.
Mercy Street follows the lives of two nurses from both sides of the turbulent war conflict whose lives interact at a hospital in Alexandria in 1862. The rich heritage of Virginia plays a key role in the series.
Incorporating Virginia-crafted spirits, Blackwall Hitch’s bar management has created the following cocktails which will debut, like Mercy Street, on January 17.
- THE GENERAL: A refined, slightly peaty martini using Wasmunds Single Malt Whisky, house-made raspberry syrup and lemon juice. Spirits from Sperryville, Virginia’s Copperfox Distillery. $13
- CONFEDERATE FLIP: a traditional bold and creamy rum-based flip featuring George Bowman’s Colonial Era Dark Caribbean Rum, egg and molasses topped with Devils Backbone Vienna Lager. Spirits from A Smith Bowman Distillery, Fredericksburg, Virginia (and originally from the Northern Virginia area now known as Reston) and Devils Backbone Brewery, Charlottesville. $13
- MERCY STREET SOUR: A twist on the traditional New York Sour that uses Bowman’s Brothers Virginia Straight Bourbon Whisky, apricot brandy, fresh sour mix and a float of ruby port. Spirits from A Smith Bowman Distillery, Fredericksburg, Virginia. $13
