MLK sign in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia along Route 1 (Courtesy Glenn Klauss on Facebook)

On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, and with less than a week before inauguration day, a Martin Luther King Jr. sign has appeared along Route 1 in Alexandria, Virginia that reads ‘Refuse to cooperate with an evil system.’

The sign is located on the fencing at the soccer fields at Simpson Park in Alexandria right near Monroe Avenue. It is unclear at this writing who put the sign up.

I couldn’t find that exact quote by Dr. King. The closest I could find is “I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.”

I believe the sign is in reference to Henry Thoreau’s essay on civil disobedience titled ‘Stride Toward Freedom’ which Dr. King often referenced during the Civil Rights movement. As author John Ansbro notes, Dr. King was fascinated with Thoreau’s idea in the essay of refusing to cooperate with an evil system.

What’s your favorite Dr. King quote?

Construction on new Dominion Power Substation causing nearby homes to shake

We were alerted by several readers to loud construction from the new Dominion Power substation on Monroe Avenue in Del Ray causing their homes to shake.

Here’s an example of some of the texts/tweets we’ve received:

According to Dominion, the new substation will provide additional capacity for future growth in the area and potentially create shorter power outage times during storms and other weather incidents. Dominion apologizes to residents and says the loud work causing the shaking should last only till the end of this week.

Al's Steak House in Del Ray

Al’s Steakhouse Projects Reopening December 2016 – Will be at Art on the Avenue

This is an update to this post. After suffering a devastating fire on their grand reopening day, the Del Ray community came out and supported Al’s Steakhouse with a HUGE fundraiser.

A Del Ray institution, Al’s Steak House closed in December 2015 after the death of John Severson, who took over the shop from its namesake in 1965. The Breeding family, longtime customers of Al’s Steak House, purchased the restaurant, and has worked with the Severson family to preserve the neighborhood landmark and its signature steak-and-cheese sandwiches.

Now, looks like the Breeding family is targeting December for the grand reopening and they are looking be at Art on the Avenue this October.

Projected date of reopening is early December. Contractor will begin removing the equipment this week and demolishing some of the interior while we wait on the Architect to finish the building plans for permits.

However, If you really can’t wait until December come see us at Art on the Avenue! We will have only Steak N Cheese, Chips and drinks. We are in the process of completing the application and we will post further notice once it’s guaranteed! See you October 1st!

Join me in shouting Woohoo!

Having spotted President Obama on multiple occasions in Del Ray, Kevin Bacon on the Avenue, ‘Scandal’ actor Tony Goldwyn at Emma’s and most recently ‘Scandal’ actress Bellamy Young (photos), you never know who you might see along Mount Vernon Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

The Dairy Godmother spotted Washington Nationals star and reigning NL MVP Bryce Harper yesterday near the shop on Labor Day before the game against the Atlanta Braves.
