Firenza Pizza

3Pizza lovers in Alexandria are about to get a fresh take on the fast-casual phenomenon that is sweeping across the country. Firenza, a Virginia-based chain of pizza restaurants touting “Pizza Like Never Before” has opened in the Festival at Manchester Lakes Shopping Center at 7001 Manchester Blvd. in the Fairfax County area of Alexandria, Virgnia.

The 2,100-square-foot location, which seats 60, marks the second venture in what company officials hope to grow into a thriving franchise. The first Firenza location opened in March in the city of Fairfax.

“We couldn’t be more excited about bringing Firenza to Alexandria,” said Firenza co-founder and President Dave Baer. “Come in today by yourself, or bring along your family and friends. We have something for everyone to enjoy, and we look forward to making your next dining experience one like never before.”

As one of the nation’s newest concepts in the burgeoning fast-casual pizza segment, Firenza offers hand crafted, made-to-order pizzas with unlimited toppings, per customer’s choice, for one low price.

In Chipotle-esque fashion, customers can pick and choose from nearly 40 toppings – six signature sauces, seven cheeses, nine meats and 17 veggies – and watch their customized pies assembled right in front of them. For those customers who don’t want to create their pizzas from scratch, Firenza also offers eight, chef-inspired signature pizzas. Once the 10-inch pizzas are assembled, they’re baked in an open flame stone-hearth oven and guaranteed to be done within five minutes.

While convenience and price are important selling points, the priority for Baer is phenomenal pizza. “Unlike most other fast casual pizza chains where the crusts are premade and machine-pressed, our pizza dough is made in house daily and hand-stretched to order right in front of the customers,” he said.

Once the pizza dough is stretched, customers can customize their pizzas with unlimited toppings for one low price. The cost of a simple pizza with cheese and one topping is $6.99. Pizzas with more than one topping are $7.99.

Other menu items include oven baked wings, meatballs and custom salads. Beverages include beer and wine, Mexican Coca-Cola, and Coke freestyle fountain drinks.

“We’ve changed the way families enjoy pizza. Always fresh and always convenient, we are the fastest pizza maker in Virginia,” said Baer.

In an effort to give back to the community, guests who make a $2 donation in-store to the Fairfax Volunteer Fire Department between November 9 to November 15 will get a free create-your-own 10” pizza.

Restaurant hours are Sundays through Thursdays from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM, Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM.

Wegmans Employees and Local Members of the Armed Forces to Dedicate and Raise American Flag at Alexandria Store

To commemorate Armed Forces Day on Saturday, May 16, an American flag will be dedicated and raised at Wegmans’ new Alexandria store, set to open June 14. The ceremony begins at 10:00 AM when the honor guard will present a 10’ X 15’ flag to be raised atop a 50-ft. flag pole in front of the store.

“Armed Forces Day is a day to salute all of the men and women in all branches of the service,” said Wegmans Alexandria Store Manager Mike Dempsey. “It is an honor to raise our flag over Alexandria for the first time on this special day, and we’re eager to proudly serve those who protect our country.”

Dempsey will give brief remarks and recognize the local employees who have served or are currently serving in the military. Fort Belvoir Garrison Commander Colonel Michelle D. Mitchell will dedicate the flag, which will be raised by Alexandria employee Chris Woltering, who served in the Army. The ceremony will conclude with the singing of the national anthem and a cake celebration. Seating and light refreshments will be available.

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday of May each year. At one time, each branch of the military had its own day of celebration. On August 31, 1949, then Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of Armed Forces Day. President Harry Truman also announced the holiday in a presidential proclamation on February 20, 1950. All branches of the military were asked to celebrate on this day and they complied on the first Armed Forces Day which was held on May 20, 1950.
