Meggrolls at 107 N. Fayette Street in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia

If you’re not familiar with Meghan Baroody’s delicious ‘meggrolls’, you take an egg roll, add creative fillings like Buffalo chicken or mac n’ cheese, fry until crisp-and-gooey.

On Thursday, the food truck operator-turned-caterer announced more about her brick-and-mortar concept. The 25-seat shop will open in Old Town, Alexandria in April 2017 in the former home of Five Guys.

In an email to customers, Meghan wrote:

So many amazing things have happened since Meggrolls reached its Kickstarter campaign goal last Valentine’s Day, just one year ago.

After an exciting, action-packed 2016, my business partner Alex and I are pumped to make this year even more memorable.

On February 1st, we received the keys to our new home at 107 N. Fayette St. in Old Town, Alexandria (the old Five Guys), and the transformation has already commenced!

We could not be more thrilled with how the shop is coming together– Lookin’ sharp!

And if things continue to move along smoothly, we’ll be ready to open the doors in April– so exciting!

The city and the small business community of Old Town have shown us so much support– we already feel like we are a part of the family.

We simply can’t wait to bring something unique and special to the city of Alexandria, and I’m so excited and proud to be raising my business here in my hometown.

Please make sure to connect with us on Facebook and Instagram for even more updates as they happen!

Thanks for all of your support!

Kiosk ordering - now rolling out at Alexandria, Virginia area McDonald's
In addition to mobile payments, McDonald’s is updating U.S. restaurants with self-service kiosk ordering, “smart” menu boards, custom sandwiches and table service, according to Reuters

Kiosk ordering has now come to Alexandria, Virginia area McDonald’s as the 61-year-old company is playing catch up in the technology area to early adopters such as Domino’s Pizza, Starbucks and Panera Bread. Instead of waiting in line to carefully convey your complicated order, folks can tap it into a giant touch screen.

The kiosks (‘Create Your Taste’) “let you order exactly what you want with more choices than ever before,” the company website says.

I noticed that the North Henry Street McDonald’s now has fully operational kiosks. As of right now, you do have to interact with a human at the register if you want to pay with cash; the kiosks accept mobile payment options from Apple and Google, and debit or credit cards.

I’m told the only other McDonald’s in the Alexandria, Virginia area that has them right now is the Glebe Road store.

McDonald’s is trying to build a better McDonald’s – for a FULL look at the changes coming to all stores, see this video.

Al’s Steakhouse Projects Reopening December 2016 – Will be at Art on the Avenue

This is an update to this post. After suffering a devastating fire on their grand reopening day, the Del Ray community came out and supported Al’s Steakhouse with a HUGE fundraiser.

A Del Ray institution, Al’s Steak House closed in December 2015 after the death of John Severson, who took over the shop from its namesake in 1965. The Breeding family, longtime customers of Al’s Steak House, purchased the restaurant, and has worked with the Severson family to preserve the neighborhood landmark and its signature steak-and-cheese sandwiches.

Now, looks like the Breeding family is targeting December for the grand reopening and they are looking be at Art on the Avenue this October.

Projected date of reopening is early December. Contractor will begin removing the equipment this week and demolishing some of the interior while we wait on the Architect to finish the building plans for permits.
