For the twelfth consecutive year, local realtor Jen Walker is sponsoring movie screenings in Del Ray this spring and summer called ‘Cinema Del Ray‘. Bring the family, friends, blankets and chairs. Fun starts at 7:00 PM (Gates OPEN) Saturday (7/16), the movie begins at dusk.

This weekend’s movie is Toy Story. A cowboy doll is profoundly threatened and jealous when a new spaceman figure supplants him as top toy in a boy’s room.

The movies are FREE of charge and the screenings are located in the field next to Mount Vernon Recreation Center at 2701 Commonwealth Ave in Del Ray. Popcorn, candy and soda will be for sale.

Sorry, no four-legged friends are allowed.

City Presents Award-Winning Tons of Trucks Event on Saturday, July 16

The City will host its second annual Tons of Trucks event on Saturday, July 16, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Chinquapin Park, located at 3210 King Street in Alexandria, Virginia. The event will take place rain or shine.

Real-World Science from Adored J.K. Rowling Series ‘Harry Potter’

On Saturday & Sunday, July 30-31, come to the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Old Town Alexandria to celebrate Harry Potter’s birthday.

On Sunday, July 31, during tours between 1:30 PM and 6:00 PM, families explore The Real World Science Behind Harry Potter as they discover Mandrake root, Dragon’s Blood, Unicorn root, and countless other “magical” plant concoctions. But don’t worry; there are no screaming plants on this tour!

Cost for the family-friendly tour on July 31 is $6 per person ages 5 and up; advance purchase for a timed ticket is required through the online store, and all children must be accompanied by ticketed adult.

On Saturday, July 30, adults are invited to a special evening celebration from 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM – Happy Birthday Harry! Tour the museum for a more in-depth look at the real world of Harry Potter, make your own Dragon’s Blood Tooth Powder, test your trivia knowledge, and compete for best costume.

Cost is $30 per person, 21 and older only, and includes birthday cake and magical cocktails. Advance purchase of limited tickets is required and are available online.

The Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum in Old Town Alexandria is noted for its outstanding collection of medicinal herbs, shop furnishings, apothecary bottles and equipment, many still in their original location. It also has a spectacular collection of archival materials, including journals, letters and diaries, prescription and formula books, ledgers, orders and invoices. The names of famous customers appear in the documents, including Martha Washington, Nelly Custis, and Robert E. Lee.

City of Alexandria to Hold Annual USA & City Birthday Celebration on July 9 

The City of Alexandria will celebrate its 267th and the USA’s 240th birthday on Saturday, July 9, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., at Oronoco Bay Park, 100 Madison St., (located at the Potomac River between Fairfax, Pendleton, and Madison Streets). In the event of inclement weather, fireworks only will be rescheduled for Sunday, July 10, at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free.

The evening will kick off with a performance by B2B Band, a Jimmy Buffet tribute band, playing cover and original songs. Next to perform is the U. S. Army Band Downrange, part of the U. S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” featuring popular music with a repertoire of rock, pop, country, R & B, and inspirational signature patriotic arrangements.  The main event features the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra with Guest Conductor Victoria Gau presenting an explosive night of fun and fanfare.

The City of Alexandria will host the 14th Annual Comcast Outdoor Film Festival on Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16 at Waterfront Park, 1A Prince St. Gates open at 6:00 PM and movies begin at approximately 8:30 pm (at dusk).
Admission is FREE.

The 2016 film schedule is as follows:

A portion of the proceeds earned will benefit Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, Alexandria Chapter. Participants may bring blankets or lawn chairs to sit on, and coolers and outside food items are welcome. No grilling allowed.

In the event of rain, the evening’s film showing will be cancelled.

Visitors to the historic district are encouraged bike, walk or take the Metrorail Yellow or Blue lines to the King Street Station and take King Street Trolley to the festival. Vine on the Waterfront Food & Wine Festival in Alexandria, Virginia

The annual Vine on the Waterfront Food & Wine Festival returns this summer to Alexandria, Virginia on Saturday, June 25th. Formally known as the Alexandria Food & Wine Festival, the festival will take place from 12:00PM -6:00PM on Old Town’s waterfront at Oronoco Bay Park and will expand to include both restaurants within Alexandria and other eateries throughout the region.

The festival is a community-based event featuring tastes of local foods and wine, as well as artisans, a Children’s Corner, and live entertainment by Justin Trawick & The Common Goods and Allan Scott Band. The event will transform Oronoco Bay Park into a lively festival easily accessible by car, Metrorail or Dash Bus.

Attendees will be able to sample food and wine from a variety of local restaurants and Virginia’s wineries. Local restaurants will compete for the best appetizer, the best main course and the best dessert – judged by notable DC individuals such as Jummy Olabanji, (Good Morning Washington Anchor), Tommy McFly (Host of The Tommy Show on 94.7 Fresh FM), and Molly Ahern (The List Are You On It).
