Here is the 2017 George Washington Birthday Parade Route & Road Closures

As readers know, thousands will join in the revelry for the 285th anniversary of George Washington’s birth in his hometown of Alexandria, Virginia.

The nation’s largest George Washington Birthday parade, happening Monday, February 20 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, marches a one-mile route through the streets of Old Town Alexandria. With nearly 3,500 participants, this community parade honors one of the city’s favorite sons.

There will be road closures in force for this event. Roads east of Washington Street, between Franklin and Princess Streets, will be closed from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM on Monday (see below). Expect delays in the southeast/southwest neighborhoods in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia.

We have learned that residents in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia can expect INCREASED traffic and possible protests around the Courthouse today (Friday) as there is a case involving the recent Donald Trump executive order being heard at the Courthouse today.

Woodrow Wilson Bridge Shut Down

UPDATE (3:45 PM): Maryland State Police source tells us all lanes of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge have now reopened. Closure occurred after a car and possible package in the car that was left behind after a person jumped into the Potomac River were ‘deemed not a threat’ by authorities.

UPDATE (3:33 PM): Update from VDOT –
“On I-95 in the City of Alexandria, at Woodrow Wilson Bridge, motorists can expect major delays due to an incident. The south left lane, center lane, right lane, and right shoulder are closed. Traffic backups are approximately 4.0 miles. Traffic is getting by on the left shoulder.”

UPDATE (3:23 PM): Outer loop ramps to 495 closed in Alexandria. Update issued from Alexandria Police

UPDATE (3:11 PM): Sources tell us the Woodrow Wilson Bridge shut down also included a person that jumped from the bridge into the Potomac River. The Alexandria Fire Department’s boat (Boat 201) has rescued the person who jumped in the water and the person was taken to a local hospital. It is still unclear how the jumper and suspicious package are connected.

A suspicious package has shut down ALL lanes of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Sunday afternoon.

Authorities were called to the scene on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge around 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Woodrow WIlson bridge crosses the Potomac River between Alexandria, Virginia, and Oxon Hill, Maryland. Hundreds of thousands of cars travel the frequently congested Capital Beltway daily.

Construction Accident in Old Town North

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating an industrial accident that occurred during rush hour this morning in the 700 block of Wythe Street at Washington Street.

One person was burned by electricity and transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Sources says construction crane accidentally hit power lines and construction worker was injured.

The 700 block of Wythe is closed to traffic. Many traffic lights in that area are out due to the power outage from the accident.

Treat all uncontrolled intersections as four-way stops. Please be patient and take turns.

Dump Truck accident on Eastbound Duke Street at N. Quaker Lane in Alexandria, Virginia

At approximately 1:00 PM, a dump truck traveling eastbound on Duke Street in Alexandria, Virginia flipped on its side causing traffic backups. Traffic is now open one (1) lane eastbound but, expect major delays heading into the afternoon rush hour in this corridor. Hearing accident should be clear by 3:00 PM.

Lane Closures Lifted in Virginia for Labor Day Weekend Travel

Alternate route encouraged for Virginia Beach, Outer Banks traffic

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is prepared for the surge of travelers expected to use the commonwealth’s interstates and highways over the extended Labor Day holiday travel period.

From noon Friday, Sept. 2, until noon Tuesday, Sept. 6, VDOT is suspending most road work and lifting lane closures on most interstates in Virginia to ease the travel woes of Labor Day travelers.
