Beatley Friends’ Group Spring Book Sale Starting Tuesday, March 21

The Friends of the Beatley Central Library will hold their Spring Book Sale from Tuesday, March 21 to Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the Charles E. Beatley, Jr. Central Library, located at 5005 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22304. Free parking is available.

Over 30,000 books, DVDs, CDs and audio books, donated by community members, will be available for sale. Most cost less than $3.00. All proceeds benefit the programs and facilities of the Library.

Alexandria Law Library hosts ‘Drafting Divorce and Separation Agreement”‘ programs on September 12th and 15th

The Alexandria Library’s Law Library is pleased to announce that it will host two (2) programs on “Drafting Divorce and Separation Agreements” in conjunction with Northern Virginia Mediation Service (NVMS). The first will be presented by Ron Williams and Diana Ortiz of NVMS at Beatley Central Library – located at 5005 Duke Street – on Monday, September 12 at 6:30 pm.  The second will be presented by Rick Schapira and Diana Ortiz of NVMS at the James M. Duncan Branch – located at 2501 Commonwealth Avenue – on Thursday, September 15 at 6:00 pm.

Northern Virginia Mediation Service will explain the contents of commonly-used divorce and separation agreements (frequently referred to as “property settlement agreements”) as well as the process they use to draft these agreements.

Alexandria Library Hosts Annual ‘For Love of Country’ Essay and Poetry Contest

Alexandria Library and the For Love of Country Foundation have teamed up to host the 2nd Annual ‘For Love of Country’ Essay and Poetry Contest, “Why Vote?”

Eligible applicants for the essay and poetry contest are upcoming 7th, 8th and 9th graders, as of September 2016. All entries for both contests are due no later than Monday, September 12 at 5 p.m.

Essay work will be judged on:

  • Originality and creativity;
  • Persuasiveness;
  • Clarity, coherence and organization;
  • Grammar and spelling.

Poetry work will be judged on:

  • Originality and creativity;
  • Relevance to contest topic;
  • Clarity and coherence;
  • Spelling.

All work submitted must be original material and one entry per student is permitted (one essay or one poem). Paper submissions can be turned in by visiting your nearest Alexandria Library. Electronic submissions are accepted by e-mailing or submitting an electronic application through our website.

Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony at Beatley Central Library on Sunday, October 2. Essays and poems will not be returned. Alexandria Library will distribute multiple awards in each of the following categories: $100 Gold; $50 Silver; and $25 Bronze.

City of Alexandria Announces Schedule of Services for 2016 Independence Day Holiday

All City of Alexandria, Virginia government offices will be closed on Monday, July 4, in observance of the Independence Day holiday.

NOTE: The Alexandria Police Department will suspend enforcement of parking restrictions at metered spaces and residential permit parking districts on July 4.  This suspension of enforcement applies only to the restrictions at legal parking spaces, and does not permit parking in any location normally prohibited (for example, no parking zones, loading zones, or spaces for persons with disabilities).

Alexandria Library offers New Sunday Hours Effective Sunday, July 10

The Alexandria City Council approved funding in the FY17 budget which makes these additional hours possible at the Alexandria Library.

Effective Sunday, July 10, 2016, the following Alexandria Library branches will be open on Sundays from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm to better serve the community:

  • Beatley Central (5005 Duke Street)
  • Barrett Branch (717 Queen Street)
  • Duncan Branch (2501 Commonwealth Avenue)
  • Burke Branch (4701 Seminary Road)

Alexandria Library’s Local History/Special Collections Branch and Law Library will remain closed on Sundays.
