A video to make you smile this Sunday

Some time ago, I re-introduced the weekly palate cleanser posts (a.k.a. video of the week) on this blog. During the week, I post about road closures, stores opening, stores closing, news and things to do around Alexandria, Virginia. So, I thought maybe one post during the week could be just for fun. Therefore, a post that will cleanse the palate.

For this week, whether you have had a good week or a bad one, here is a viral video of Vin Scully reciting the famous speech performed by James Earl Jones in the 1989 movie ‘Field of Dreams.’

Los Angeles Dodgers play by play man Vin Scully, who makes a grocery list sound interesting,  is winding down his Hall of Fame broadcasting career after 67 seasons with the Dodgers.

Alexandria Aces Opening Night 2016

Alexandria Aces Beat 2015 Champion Baltimore Redbirds

The Alexandria Aces and Baltimore Redbirds entered last night with identical 4-1 records. When the dust settled, the Aces used great pitching, timely hitting, and solid defense to defeat the Cal Ripken League Champions 7-3. The win was significant in that 1) the Redbirds have owned the Aces the last few years and 2) the Redbirds have won the league championship four (4) years in a row.

The league leading Aces play their ONLY home game of the week tonight against the Baltimore Dodgers at 7:00 PM @ Frank Mann Field.

Have you taken in an Alexandria Aces game over at Frank Mann Field yet? You never know who might show up (e.g. when Cal Ripken showed up for a game).

We just want to remind you to come out in summer 2016 to support our local Alexandria Aces baseball team. The Aces play at Frank Mann Stadium located @ 3798 Commonwealth Ave in Alexandria from early June to August (where the minor league Alexandria Dukes also played). They are part of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League (CBL).

The Aces offer highly competitive games at an affordable price with most tickets priced at $5 for adults and $3 for kids. You get decent baseball for a quarter of the price it costs to go to a Nationals or Orioles game. You can’t beat that. The players aren’t quite at the minor league level, but the level of play is REALLY good.

You can find the Aces 2016 schedule at this link. Their first home game is TONIGHT (Tuesday, June 7 @ 7:00 PM).

See you this season at the park!

Alexandria Aces
The Alexandria Aces, entering their 9th Season in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, are excited to open the 2016 campaign at home at Frank Mann Field on Tuesday, June 7th against the Gaithersburg Giants at 7 PM. The Aces, as in 2015, will play 40 games, 20 at home and 20 on the road. With the return of the two division format, the Aces will again play an unbalanced schedule. In terms of the Aces South Division rivals, the DC Grays visit Frank Mann Field on Sunday, June 26th for the only scheduled home twi-night doubleheader and again in July for a single game. The 2015 League Regular Season Champions, the Bethesda Big Train, visit Alexandria for three games in July. The Aces then round out the South Division home slate with two games apiece against the Herndon Braves and Vienna Riverdogs. The Aces play their only scheduled road doubleheader against the Herndon Braves on Sunday, June 19th. One more journey to Herndon, two games each at DC and Bethesda, and three games at Vienna round out the 20 games against South Division foes.

The schedule format remains the same against the five North Division franchises as the Aces will play four games against each team, two home and two on the road. Highlights include the Home Opener versus Gaithersburg and contests against the defending League Champion Baltimore (Towson MD) Redbirds on Sunday, June 12th and Wednesday, July 6th. One more contest against Gaithersburg and two games apiece against the Baltimore (Hanover MD) Dodgers, Rockville Express and the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts complete the home games against the North Division. Overall, the Aces play 10 home games in both June and July. The regular season ends at home on July 22nd against Vienna.

For the 2016 season, the Aces are scheduled for 3 Monday, 1 Tuesday, 2 Wednesday, 4 Thursday, 4 Friday, 2 Saturday and 4 Sunday home games. Several Tuesdays, to include June 14th, 21st, and 28th and July 12th, and 19th are set aside for makeup games in the event of inclement weather. In addition, the Cal Ripken League is not slated to play on Monday, July 4th, and Monday, July 11th. The Cal Ripken League All Star game is scheduled for Wednesday July 13th.

Alexandria Aces
Your Alexandria Aces have three (3) home games this week at Frank Mann Field, located at 3700 Commonwealth Avenue in Alexandria. It’s competitive baseball at a GREAT price.

If the Aces season so far comes down to one idea, one word, it’s the two syllables above. The team has shown they have it; 12 runs against the D.C. Grays on June 5th, 11 against the Baltimore Dodgers on Saturday. But producing offense on a consistent basis seems to be the Achilles’ heel for this Aces team.

In the past two games, 18 innings, the Aces have put only one run on a scoreboard. If there is a time for the offense to begin to show up, now would be that time.

The Aces will be the away team tonight as they face the FCA Herndon Braves at home, a matchup to make up for one of the games that was postponed due to weather earlier this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Fans who cannot attend the game can follow along on Twitter or on Aces Radio.
