Kids Cuts and Community Day in Alexandria, Virginia

Organizations are partnering on a ‘Community Day’ to provide free backpacks with school supplies and haircuts for boys and girls to prepare them for the upcoming school year this Sunday (August 28).

Other activities and fun include clowns, face painting, DJ, popcorn and treats, public safety vehicles on display, and raffling off gifts to the kids. A fun day for all!

Alexandria Police COmmunity Meeting at Charles Houston Recreation Center

Residents from the Parker Gray and the Braddock Road Metro neighborhoods of Alexandria, Virginia last night for the Alexandria Police (APD) Community meeting held at the Charles Houston Recreation Center in Alexandria, Virginia. The neighborhood remain uneasy following the recent homicide on Montgomery Street that occurred last week. That was very evident at last night’s turnout.

The meeting was held to try and calm fears in the neighborhood, to give concerned residents an update on where the recent investigations stand, and for police to answer questions from the community.

Charles Houston Recreation Center
The following City of Alexandria, Virginia Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities community centers will close early at 6:00 PM on Friday, February 19 to provide for staff training: Charles Houston, Cora Kelly, Mount Vernon, Nannie J. Lee and William Ramsay. In addition, the Lee Center will close at 6:00 PM.

Classes are offered at no charge to participants. Completion of one of these workshops leads to a certificate from the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) and access to below market rate mortgage financing.

The training sessions will be held on November 21 and again on December 19 from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, located at 901 Wythe Street in Alexandria. Registration may now be completed online through VHDA or by contacting Leonardo Martinez at 703.580.8838, ext 17.

This Year’s Event for Dogs Large and Small

dog ready to go swimmingTreat your pooch to a late summertime dip at one of the City of Alexandria’s Annual Doggie Day Swims. For the first time, dogs under 25 pounds can enjoy a pool to themselves at Itty Bitty Doggie Dive on Sunday, September 13, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Charles Houston Recreation Center’s Memorial Pool, located at 901 Wythe Street in Alexandria. Dogs 25 pounds and up can enjoy Big Dog Day Swim on Saturday, September 19 from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at the Old Town Pool, located at 1609 Cameron Street.

Following the end of the summer pool season, this annual event provides dogs with the opportunity to swim and play games in one of the City’s pools. This year, due to the generous donation by Your Dogs Best Friends, admission is FREE! Register Online Now to reserve your dog (Itty Bitty Doggie Dive: activity number 134390 or Big Dog Day Swim: activity number 134391).

Dog handlers must be 16 years of age or older, and cannot swim or enter the pool with their dogs. Dogs must be sociable and remain leashed while on the pool deck. All dogs should wear current vaccination tags or must have a current rabies certificate or letter from their veterinary stating that they have received the shots in order to gain entry to the event. Space is limited to 100 dogs in the pool area at one time.

Recently, at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, hundreds of neighbors from the Braddock Road Metro neighborhood and across Alexandria, Virginia attended a community meeting led by the Alexandria Police Department (APD) that addressed the recent ‘shots fired’ calls, shootings and the first homicide of 2015.

APD called the meeting after Shakkan Elliott-Tibbs of Woodbridge was shot and killed in the 700 block of North Fayette Street, which is only a few blocks from where the meeting took place.

APD is asking neighbors to join them for a community meeting on Wednesday, July 29, at 7:00 PM, at Charles Houston Recreation Center. APD will be following up on neighborhood concerns expressed at the community meeting held on July 6.
