Alexandria City Academy Now Accepting Applications for Fall 2016 Session

9-week program begins Wednesday, September 7

The City of Alexandria is now accepting applications for the Fall 2016 session of the Alexandria City Academy. The nine-week program begins on Wednesday, September 7, and each additional class will be held on the following eight Thursday nights.

The City Academy helps participants learn about local government through first-hand experience with a wide range of City functions, services, activities and issues.

Classes are held from 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM at various locations.  The program is open to Alexandria residents and business owners, and class size is limited.

To submit an application online, visit the City Academy website. To have an application mailed or faxed to you, or call 703.746.HELP (4357).  Applications are also available at City Hall, 301 King St., Room 1900.  The application deadline is Friday, July 29.

Charles Houston Recreation Center

All classes and activities are occurring at City of Alexandria Recreation Centers during normal operating hours (with the exception of Charles Barrett and Patrick Henry) on Tuesday, February 16. City Recreation Centers opened at 10:00 a.m. or their normal hour after 10:00 a.m.

All recreation after school programs, and youth and adult sport programs are cancelled on Tuesday, February 16. All classes and activities scheduled in Alexandria City Public Schools are cancelled on Tuesday, February 16.


Via our neighborhood forums, a group Ukulele class is being offered for beginners at Convergence on North Quaker Lane. Group class – age 12 and up.

“During this five-week course you’ll do plenty of strumming and finger picking in several chord families. You’ll be playing songs at your first lesson – and in only five weeks, you’ll have a repertoire ranging from Folk Song favorites to Tin Pan Alley to Pop. You’ll also gain information that will enable you to continue your journey after our course is completed.

*This class is designed for soprano, concert, or tenor size ukuleles only. If you do not already own an instrument, you may rent a soprano ukulele from the instructor for a nominal fee.*”

Upcoming Housing Training Opportunities

The City of Alexandria is offering a free training for first-time homebuyers on October 24th from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. This training leads to a certificate from the Virginia Housing Development Authority (VHDA) and access to VHDA’s below market rate mortgage financing.

This training will be held at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, located at 901 Wythe Street in Alexandria.  To register, contact Leonardo Martinez at 703.580.8838, ext 17.

Understanding Condominium Living, a free two-hour class which highlights the rights and responsibilities related to condominium ownership, will be held on October 17th from 2 – 4 p.m. at the Arlington Mill Community Center, 909 S. Dinwiddie Street, Arlington. This class is jointly presented by the City and Arlington County in partnership with the Washington Metropolitan Chapter of the Community Associations Institute (WMCCAI) with the support of VHDA.
