The long-delayed project to remove the temporary security measures around the Federal Courthouse in Carlyle and install a new, more permanent, may be coming to a head soon. See the video above from the May meeting of the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) where the NCPC gives its approval for the project. Starting at approx. 5:09 in the video, the presenter goes over the plans for the Courthouse.

Some of the improvements include:

  • Removal of jersey barriers around the Courthouse
  • The installation of garden walls and secure bollards around the site.
  • The movement of existing parking spaces from Jamieson Ave to Elizabeth Lane.
  • The reopening of Courthouse Square to one-way traffic (this should benefit the Westin Alexandria the most).
    • This includes pop-up bollards on Courthouse Square which can be popped up in case of a BIG trial at the Courthouse.

The City of Alexandria report on this project is located at this link. The presentation, which shows what the final design looks like can be found at this link. The final details are being worked out between the GSA, the City of Alexandria, and the Carlyle Community Council. IMHO, I would look for construction to start sometime this fall.

Several residents have asked about the status of the damaged bus shelter from Christmas Eve’s mysterious car accident at Courthouse Square Park in Carlyle. We have been informed by City of Alexandria Transportation staff that the parts have been ordered and they expect the bus shelter to be replaced in about 1 – 6 weeks. The time frame depends on the arrival of the parts and when they can get it scheduled.

Courthouse Sq Park Accident 2

From what initially was thought to be an accident/vandalism, I believe is a car accident. It looks like the car was heading southwest down Jamieson Ave where it slammed into the bus shelter then looks like the car hit the grassy area at an angle which is where our news guys were a little confused. Looks like the vehicle then smashed the two park benches. I can see how it would be difficult to determine whether it was an accident or vandalism based upon the distance between the benches and the bus shelter.

I called the Alexandria Police to get a report since the Carlyle Community Council (I’m on the board) owns the property and found that the great reporting that Michael Lee Pope at the Alexandria Gazette has done on the Alexandria Police and their lack of transparency is 100% spot on. I had great difficulty trying to get much information about the accident from the Police. If I can find out more, I’ll post it here.

UPDATE: Looks like it was a car accident after all.
At first glance one would think there was a car accident that occurred in these photos. There are two possibilities here:

  1. Somebody took the corner too soon and rammed the bus shelter then got out and took out their frustration on the two benches near the water fountain.
  2. It was just plain old vandalism. How someone could do that at Christmas time is just hard to understand. This is the choice I think it is due to the lack of skid marks.

If anyone saw or heard anything please let us know in the comments below.
