Voting is now open for the 2017 “Heart of Del Ray” contest, sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association.

Every February, the Del Ray Business Association presents the Heart of Del Ray Award to the business that serves as the heart and soul of Del Ray, as determined by a public vote of neighbors and customers. Selection is based on which business best demonstrates their warm and welcoming attitude to the community/customers, their commitment and generosity to the community, and to their overall contribution to the Del Ray community.

Health and Wellness Highlighted; Restaurants Partner With Retailers For Special Discounts

Eat, Shop, and Live in Del Ray during First Thursday!  On Sept. 1, our retailers and restaurants are partnering during First Thursday: Health and Wellness on The Avenue to showcase the best of Del Ray.

SHOP:  Make a purchase at Bellies and Babies, The Dog Store, Greenstreet Gardens, Kiskadee, Purple Goose, or Top It Off on Sept. 1.  Purchases can be made at any time of day, but the receipt must be dated 9/1/16.

EAT:  From 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, bring your receipt dated Sept. 1 from one of the above retailers to a participating restaurant for 15% off your entree!  Participating restaurants: Caboose Cafe, Cheesetique, Emma’s Espresso & Wine Bar, Evening Star, Fireflies, Holy Cow, Junction Bakery & Bistro, Pork Barrel BBQ, Stomping Ground, Streets Market & Café (restaurant side only), Taqueria Pablano, and the sushi bar.  Note: offer good for one discounted entree per receipt, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM only.

LIVE:  During First Thursday: Health And Wellness, stroll the Avenue and learn about the many health and wellness services and studios on the Avenue.  A wide variety of FREE health and wellness classes and demonstrations will take place, along with a scavenger hunt, live music by The Irish Breakfast Band, a hula hoop contest with the Alexandria Sheriff’s Department, mini chair massages, golf, cornhole, children’s activities, and more.  Space in the free classes are limited; click this link to register.

Held the first Thursday of the month from April to September along Mount Vernon Avenue, First Thursday is a series of free outdoor street festivals that bring the community together around a fun theme, benefiting a local nonprofit.

This month, the Del Ray Business Association is collecting NEW teddy bears; they will be distributed to the City of Alexandria Police and Fire Departments, the Alexandria Battered Women’s Shelter, and local hospitals to be given to children in crisis.  Donations can be dropped off at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, Ease Yoga & Cafe, and Greenstreet Gardens of Del Ray.

You may know actress Bellamy Young for her role as former first lady Mellie Grant on ABC’s hit show “Scandal.” This weekend, she’s in Virginia on the campaign trail herself to help elect former first lady Hillary Clinton. Young is stomping for Hillary Clinton throughout Virginia today and tomorrow, and the actress will be getting a tour of the Del Ray neighborhood along Mount Vernon Avenue.

This Saturday, from 10:45-11:45, the actress will be getting a tour of small businesses along Mount Vernon Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia with Gayle Reuter from the Del Ray Business Association. The Hillary Clinton Campaign is wanting to focus on the importance of America’s small businesses and have asked her to visit Del Ray which obviously has the best small businesses in the entire country.

June 2nd Street Festival ‘Paint Del Ray,’ Spotlighted Del Ray Artisans

ICYMI, during the June First Thursday on June 2, the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia showcased its creative side with “Paint Del Ray.”  The monthly street festival took place along Mount Vernon Avenue.

“Paint Del Ray” is a unique collaboration between the Del Ray Business Association and Del Ray Artisans. The event featured a wide variety of artist demonstrations and displays along Mount Vernon Avenue. The community was invited to participate in several family-oriented painting activities along The Avenue, including recycled plastic bottle art, painting an old car, taking pictures in the frame shop photo booth, making a garden tile, an interactive public art project, and more.

Participants were encouraged to bring art supplies for the Del Ray Artisans’ summer art camp or old birdhouses. which will be refinished by the Artisans.  Donations were collected at the Pat Miller Neighborhood Square, formerly known as the Farmers’ Market lot, at Mt. Vernon & E. Oxford Avenues. Founded in 1992, the Del Ray Artisans is a nonprofit whose mission is to promote art for the benefit of artists and the community.

This past Thursday, June 2, 2016, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Del Ray Business Association welcomed Four Directions Wellness to the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia with a ribbon cutting ceremony and open house. Four Directions Wellness founder, Mara Benner, invited the local community to attend and learn of its health and wellness.

Four Directions Wellness is affiliated with the GW Center for Integrative Medicine and is focused on the adoption of ”whole person” integrative healthcare. To support this goal, Four Directions Wellness offers an array of healing modalities through individual sessions; classes on “whole person” care; employer wellness services and consulting services on integrative health care. May 5th Street Festival, ‘Dog Days in Del Ray,’ to Benefit Animal Welfare League of Alexandria

UPDATE (11:41am): FIRST THURSDAY, Del Ray’s monthly street festival, will be postponed until May 12 due to rain

FIRST THURSDAY, Del Ray’s monthly street festival, takes place THIS Thursday May 5 from 6:00pm to dusk with the theme “Dog Days in Del Ray.”

Bring your favorite four-legged friend out to Mount Vernon Avenue for a wide variety of canine-themed activities, including an obstacle course,  K-9 Unit demonstration, doggie beer & wine tasting, dog massage & reka; a dog wash, and more.

Participants are encouraged to bring unopened cans of dog or cat food, or small puppy training treats, for the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. Donations of KONGs for dogs or cats, wand toys for cats, and dog toys. Drop off your donated items at the parking lot where the Farmers Market is held at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Ave. and E. Oxford Ave.

The event is FREE, open to ALL in Alexandria, and sponsored by Your Dog’s Best Friends and the Del Ray Business Association.
