Provide Feedback on Design Concepts for Potomac Yard Park

The Alexandria, Virginia community is invited to provide input on the design concepts for Potomac Yard Park, by visiting AlexEngage, the City’s online engagement forum. The construction of the entrance for the Potomac Yard Metrorail Station and the pedestrian/bicycle bridge from Potomac Yard to Potomac Greens will require the redesign of Potomac Yard Park around East Glebe Road. Concepts for the redesigned park were discussed at the Potomac Yard Metrorail Implementation Work Group (PYMIG) meeting on Thursday, February 11.

Comments received by 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, will be compiled and discussed at the next PYMIG meeting on Thursday, March 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street. This feedback will inform the conceptual design process for Potomac Yard Park. The public is invited to attend all PYMIG meetings.

Over the next several months, residents and other stakeholders are invited to provide input at public meetings and online via AlexEngage, as the conceptual designs for the new Metrorail station and the redesigns for Potomac Yard Park and Potomac Greens Park are developed.

Regular project updates will be given to the Alexandria Planning Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission, Board of Architectural Review, and City Council. The public process will be supported by a design team consisting of consultants and staff from the City, Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), and the National Park Service.

Due to the deterioration of the roadway and crew availability, the City of Alexandria has determined that E. Glebe Road between Route 1 and Commonwealth Avenue needs to be repaved as soon as possible due to its current condition.

Therefore, the paving will begin on Monday, November 9 and last approximately one week.

During all times of construction, at least one lane will remain open for reversible traffic, maintained by traffic control and flaggers.

After the paving is complete, the center line will be marked with temporary tape so that thermoplastic can be installed at a later date, most likely in the Spring, after the public outreach has been completed to determine other improvements to the road, such as bike facilities and crosswalks.

The City is planning to do a “Complete Streets” project for the street in the Spring of 2016, and there will be public outreach with the Lynhaven community this Winter to begin discussion on the additional needs for the road.
