Fusion Academy Open for the School Year in Carlyle

Fusion is an accredited private school for middle and high school for grades 6-12 that started in California in 1989 and has expanded to 39 campuses across the country, including the DMV region. They have leased space at 333 John Carlyle Street that will be ready for move in mid-fall. Until then, the Academy is using temporary space next door at 1900 Duke Street.

They are holding an information session on September 14th from 9 – 10:30 am at Society Fair in Alexandria.

According to its website, the Academy is a community of learning where positive relationships and one-to-one classrooms unlock the academic potential for students to create opportunities for emotional and social growth. In a Fusion one-to-one classroom, the educational experience is customized, classes are self-paced, and course material is presented in ways that suit students’ individual interests, strengths and challenges. Fusion offers over 250 middle and high school courses, all of which meet state standards. Students complete all schoolwork on-site, instead of at home. Fusion Academy will add to the mix of child learning centers located in Carlyle, joining Bright Horizons which opened in late 2015.

Divine Nail Spa located at 506 John Carlyle Street in Alexandria, Virginia
Divine Nail and Spa, with two locations in the Northern Virginia area, is soon opening in Alexandria, Virginia. The new location will be at 506 John Carlyle Street next door to Sweet Fire Donna’s. The spa offers manicures, pedicures, and spa treatments.

We had heard this was to be a May 2016 opening and will keep tabs on it.

Whiskey and Oyster restaurant under construction in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria

New seafood restaurant from ‘Mango’ Mike Anderson in Alexandria, Virginia

As we have told you, a new seafood restaurant from ‘Mango’ Mike Anderson, called ‘Whiskey and Oyster’, is now under construction in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia in the old Pizzeria Venti space. This will be the first seafood joint in Carlyle and the restaurant will offer a variety of raw oysters, seafood choices, and a really long bar (hence the name change) in a 4,400 square foot space. This is the second joint to open in Carlyle from Mike, his wife Donna and business partner Bill Blackburn in Carlyle (Sweet Fire Donna’s is the other).

We hear this will be a late 3rd quarter opening.

City of Alexandria Police Department - bank robbery
Late last night, the Alexandria Police Department investigated a robbery from person that occurred at John Carlyle Street and Jamieson Avenue in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

Police report that three suspects (two female and one male) assaulted the victim and stole items. Police also reported that all suspects in the case were apprehended and arrested.

The Uptowner Cafe Has Closed

New seafood restaurant ‘OSHUN’ from Sweet Fire Donna’s owner ‘Mango’ Mike Anderson

As we told you, a new full-service restaurant ‘OSHUN’ (an acronym for ‘Organization of Shellfish and Healthy Underwater Nutrition’), plans to open in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia at 333 John Carlyle Street.

The restaurant plans on serving lunch and dinner and will be open from 11:00 a.m. to Midnight daily according to the documents. The restaurant will have indoor seating for 95, a full bar, oyster bar, and patio seating. We did find out from ‘Mango’ Mike Anderson that the restaurant aims to take over the old Pizzeria Venti space at the location and the old dry cleaner next door (see above).

According to planning documents filed TODAY with the City, a new full-service restaurant ‘OSHUN’ (an acronym for ‘Organization of Shellfish and Healthy Underwater Nutrition’), plans to open in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia at 333 John Carlyle Street. We had told you about the possibility of a new restaurant here some time ago. This is a new restaurant endeavor from ‘Mango’ Mike Anderson, who owns numerous restaurants in Alexandria – Pork Barrel BBQ in Del Ray, Sushi Del Ray, and of course Sweet Fire Donna’s (also located in Carlyle).

It is unclear at this writing whether the seafood restaurant is going into the vacant space you see above at the corner of Jamieson Avenue and John Carlyle Street or, if it is taking over the vacated Pizzeria Venti space. We have contacted Mike for comment.

Bright Horizons opening new location in Alexandria, Virginia

This is an update to this post.

As we told have told you, a new child care center is coming soon at 1900 Jamieson Ave in the Carlyle neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

Bright Horizons Child Care Centers is expanding their operation at the current space at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). They expect to care for as many as 166 kids from 6 weeks to five (5) years old in the new space and have promised to give Carlyle parents first priority. The center will be open M-F 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

We can confirm that the long-awaited opening of the new Bright Horizons daycare center in Carlyle is slated for Tuesday, January 19. We have also heard that the center is still offering spaces for their older child programs.
