On this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, and with less than a week before inauguration day, a Martin Luther King Jr. sign has appeared along Route 1 in Alexandria, Virginia that reads ‘Refuse to cooperate with an evil system.’

The sign is located on the fencing at the soccer fields at Simpson Park in Alexandria right near Monroe Avenue. It is unclear at this writing who put the sign up.

I couldn’t find that exact quote by Dr. King. The closest I could find is “I became convinced that noncooperation with evil is as much a moral obligation as is cooperation with good.”

I believe the sign is in reference to Henry Thoreau’s essay on civil disobedience titled ‘Stride Toward Freedom’ which Dr. King often referenced during the Civil Rights movement. As author John Ansbro notes, Dr. King was fascinated with Thoreau’s idea in the essay of refusing to cooperate with an evil system.

What’s your favorite Dr. King quote?

Construction on new Dominion Power Substation causing nearby homes to shake

We were alerted by several readers to loud construction from the new Dominion Power substation on Monroe Avenue in Del Ray causing their homes to shake.

Here’s an example of some of the texts/tweets we’ve received:

According to Dominion, the new substation will provide additional capacity for future growth in the area and potentially create shorter power outage times during storms and other weather incidents. Dominion apologizes to residents and says the loud work causing the shaking should last only till the end of this week.

On the way to last night’s Alexandria Aces game at Frank Mann Field, I started getting quite a lot of texts, emails, Facebook messages (more than 3 dozen) about a serious multi-vehicle (4 cars) accident at Commonwealth Avenue and E. Monroe Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported in the accident.

Everybody who messaged me wanted to know where the Alexandria Police (APD) were after being called. I got reports of Police taking 45 minutes to get to the scene (6:45 PM – 7:30 PM) and that traffic was ‘a bad mess in the area’ (why I dubbed it a ‘serious’ accident).

So, I reached out to an insurance friend of mine and APD on this incident for comment.

Aldi
As we told you first, ALDI is planning on taking over the location of the now closed Giant Food store on Monroe Avenue in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

I continue to get asked from from MANY people (Twitter, text, and email) about a rumor going around Del Ray that the ALDI Food Market has opted out of the deal to come to Del Ray. One thing that is fueling the rumor is that Giant Food’s lease on the building runs until January 31, 2016. Nothing can be done on or to the building until that time.

I can confirm to you that the rumor is 100% FALSE. ALDI is still coming to the Monroe Avenue location as I have confirmed with ALDI’s attorney that ALDI has filed its building permit plans with the City and looks forward to opening the new store on Monroe Avenue.

Giant Food on Monroe Ave in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia
This is an update to this post.

As we have told you, the Notch 8 apartments have been under construction in the Potomac Yard neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia. As readers know, with that construction, located at E Glebe Road & Route 1, will come a 68,000 square-foot brand new Giant Food store (see below).

This has been in the works since before construction began on the new space at Notch 8 in January 2014. As readers also know, the Giant Food in Old Town North closed recently and the lease for the Giant Food in Del Ray was up on January 31, 2016. We told you it was confirmed closing earlier this year.

Multiple sources NOW tell me that the Del Ray Giant on Monroe Avenue will close on September 3, 2015 and the new Giant Food in Potomac Yard will open September 4. I am told many, if not all of the store’s team members will be at the new store. Yours truly will be getting a ‘first look’ at the new Giant Food store in the near future.

The Giant Food at Notch 8 will take up the first floor of the development, with two-and-a-half levels of underground parking for residents and retail customers. We hear the new store will include a Starbucks, bakery, pharmacy and an outdoor cafe.

As we have also told you, an ALDI Food Market, one of three (3) moving into Alexandria, is taking over the old Giant Food spot on Monroe Avenue.

The new ALDI will be open from 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 8:00 AM Saturdays, and 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM Sundays.

Giant Food has an active lease on the Monroe Avenue space until January 2016. There has been no word from Giant Food if they will be out of the space sooner as ALDI can do no work on the space until this happens.
