Bike lane

The City’s Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES), Transportation Planning Division recently held a public meeting on an upcoming Complete Streets project along King Street between Radford Street and Janneys Lane.

The purpose of this meeting was to seek community input.  The project will be implemented in conjunction with the resurfacing of the roadway. Complete Streets are streets that are designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists, and transit riders of all ages and abilities.

ICYMI, you can find the presentation from the meeting at this link (PDF) and compiled public comments are at this link (PDF).

bus approaching highland
The City of Alexandria recently released a memo (PDF) showing that in the 18 months since the King Street bike lanes were installed that crashes are starting to decrease.

The City claims that speeds have decreased as well but, if the City is going on the speed recorded from the speed display signs located both eastbound and westbound along Shuter’s Hill, these have historically been 3 – 5 mph off which would put speeds about the same as before. This would match with what we have tracked both before the and after the bike lanes were installed.

Have you noticed any changes in driver behavior since the bike lanes were installed in this corridor?

Via NBC4’s Jackie Bensen, here’s some video from last night’s North Ridge Citizens Association meeting where Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook addressed dozens of parents who filled a church in Alexandria, Virginia Monday night after a man’s body was found in a playground.
