Drivers parking
This holiday season, as parking lots at shopping malls fill with millions of vehicles, AAA warns drivers to avoid a common parking lot mistake. According to a new survey, more than three quarters (76 percent) of U.S. drivers most frequently park their vehicle by pulling forward into a parking spot, rather than backing in, a riskier practice that driving experts warn leaves pedestrians more vulnerable when a driver later reverses from the spot and into the traffic lane.  (more…)

Grassroots Campaign Invites Public to Share their Local Favorites

There is a new city-wide campaign focused on engaging visitors, shoppers and residents about why they are passionate about the City of Alexandria’s local shopping, restaurants, arts and more. Kicking off in time for Small Business Saturday and the holiday season, #CraveYourLocal is a grassroots campaign that provides a platform for individuals to voice their cravings for the unique qualities that draw them to Alexandria to shop, dine and explore the city’s authentic culture and history.

“Nearly 2/3 of travelers want ‘the real destination’ rather than a commercial tourism product,” said Patricia Washington, President & CEO of Visit Alexandria. “In addition, 70% of American consumers will be shopping at local small businesses and boutiques this holiday season. We want to honor these trends by sharing the authentically local assets and elements that people crave year-round in our beloved city.” (Sources: Destination Analysts State of American Traveler July 2015; Deloitte 2015 Holiday Survey).

The public is invited to share what they crave about Alexandria’s local scene by using the hashtag #CraveYourLocal. An example Tweet would be “I crave the personal attention I get at @BellaCaraVA #CraveYourLocal.” Instagram photos might be captioned “I crave my daily caffeine from Misha’s Coffee! #CraveYourLocal” and “I crave biking to Jones Point Park during sunset. #CraveYourLocal”  (more…)

This Saturday, head to the DC region’s “shop small” headquarters for Small Business Saturday on November 28th. More than 30 independent Alexandria boutiques will offer special promotions, such as merchandise discounts, gifts with purchase, complimentary services, treats, and/or festive activities for shoppers to enjoy.

Last year, Alexandria, Virginia was selected as one of three cities, alongside San Francisco and New York, for the “Shop Small” street banner program, encouraging shoppers to “Find Something Extraordinary” this holiday season. The street lamp banners appear along King Street and Mount Vernon Avenue, the city’s two largest retail corridors, where 80% of the retailers and restaurants are independently or regionally owned. Holiday shoppers will be rewarded for their “shop local” loyalty.

Also on this Small Business Saturday, the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce will once again be handing out shopping bags containing maps, coupons, prizes, and special treats for small business Saturday shoppers. On November 28, Chamber staff will be by Market Square between 9am and noon and then will move to Del Ray in front of Pork Barrel BBQ around 12:15-1:15 PM.
