Small Area Plan Comments accepted from public NOW through Sunday, December 13

Visit AlexEngage through Sunday, December 13th to share your thoughts on how the Old Town North neighborhood can be strengthened with more opportunities to live, work, recreate, learn and shop. Comments received will inform the development of the Old Town North Small Area Plan Update.

You may also provide feedback online throughout this 18-month planning process by using the Old Town North Small Area Plan Update Comment Board. The group wants to hear any ideas you may have relating to opportunities and amenities that should be explored for Old Town North or issues that you believe should be addressed.

On Monday, November 9, 2015, 7:00 – 9:00 pm – The Old Town North Small Area Plan (OTN SAP) Advisory Group will hold its second meeting at City Hall, 301 King Street, in Room 2410 (City Council Workroom). Meeting topics will include: (1) discussion of the OTN SAP Draft Project Brief (PDF) which is a summary of existing conditions, plans and policies which apply to the neighborhood; and (2) discussion of the OTN SAP Draft Project Assessment (PDF) which is a list of possible subject areas, such as land use, transportation and housing, to address as  part of the OTN SAP Update.  All meetings of the Advisory Group are open to the public.

On Thursday, November 12, 2015, 7:00 – 9:00 pm, the OTN Advisory Group will host a Community Open House, at 44 Canal Center Plaza, 4th Floor.  The evening will include: (1) exhibit tables of recently completed or pending development projects in the OTN SAP planning area as well as of Historic Old Town North sites; and (2) an overview of the upcoming public Charrette process that will be held later in November to help develop a vision, principles and objectives for the OTN SAP Update.  The public is invited to the Community Open House and more information regarding the Charrette will be available shortly through the City.

Call for Application/Nominations for the Old Town North Small Area Plan Advisory Group

GiantThe City of Alexandria, Virginia will formally begin a new Old Town North Small Area Plan planning process in fall 2015. In preparation, the City Council adopted Resolution 2682 on June 23, 2015 (PDF) establishing categories for an Old Town North Advisory Group. As noted in the Old Town North Small Area Plan Application and Nomination Processes document (PDF), the City is seeking applications and nominations for the 16-member Advisory Group. Working with staff, and other professionals, the Advisory Group will assist the City with recommendations pertaining to plan content including vision, principles, framework and with outreach activities.

The Advisory Group is anticipated to meet at least once a month with the actual schedule determined in an initial organizing meeting to be scheduled in September. The full planning process is anticipated to take 18 months from September 2015 to January 2017.

The City seeks to fill 10 slots through the Application process.

  • Old Town North Resident Representatives (5)
  • Old Town North Business Representatives (2)
  • Old Town North Redevelopment Sites/Property Owners (3)

Application forms for these 10 slots must be submitted to Nancy Williams, Department of Planning and Zoning, by 9:00 AM on August 17, 2015.

The remaining 6 of the 16 slots are commission/board seats, and nominations for those seats will be submitted by the chair of the respective commission/board, with a due date that has been extended from July 31, 2015 to August 17, 2015.

The selection and appointment of all seats will be made by the City Manager.

The Eisenhower West Small Area Plan Steering Committee will hold its 15th meeting (PDF) on Monday, July 27, 2015 from 7:00-9:00 PM in the Great Room of the Cameron Station Clubhouse located at 200 Cameron Station Boulevard. Steering Committee meetings are open to the public and members of the community are encouraged to attend and participate in these meetings, as well as the larger community meetings that are being held to solicit input on developing the Eisenhower West Small Area Plan.
