New Capital Bikeshare Station Proposed

Capital Bikeshare users will soon have another place to share bikes, this time in the Rosemont neighborhood of Alexandria, Virginia.

Alexandria, Virginia’s newest location for bicycle sharing is proposed at E. Oak and Commonwealth Avenue in the neighborhood (see below). The stand will be located about six (6) blocks north of the King Street – Old Town Metro Station. The proposal is going before tonight’s Traffic & Parking Board at 7:30 pm at City Hall.

Alexandria currently has nineteen Capital Bikeshare stations and the system has been very popular with residents and visitors to Alexandria, with over 105,000 trips departing from Alexandria stations since the program began.

Thirteen more stations have been ordered and are scheduled for installation this summer.

Henry Street & Franklin Street traffic signal in Alexandria, Virginia
The Traffic signal at the intersection of ‘Old’ Henry Street and Franklin Street in Alexandria, Virginia is proposed for removal. The issue is coming up before the Traffic & Parking Board THIS Monday (May 23, 2016) @ 7:30 pm.

The traffic signal was installed in the 1980’s when the Robert E. Lee Elementary School was in service before the school was decommissioned and converted to the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center in the 1990’s.

Since the school was decommissioned, traffic & pedestrian volume is down therefore the City feels there is no longer a need for the traffic signal at this intersection.
