Community Lodgings ‘Spring Forward’ Raises Awareness and Funding for Alexandria’s Low-Income and Homeless Families

On Sunday April 10th, 2016, Community Lodgings will host its 11th annual fundraiser, Spring Forward, from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Union Street Public House, located at 121 S. Union Street in Alexandria, VA. This event will showcase the past 11 years of Community Lodgings’ commitment to the City of Alexandria and spotlight all the work we have accomplished.

“This is going to be a fantastic event,” said Lynn Thomas, Community Lodgings’ executive director. “I’m particularly excited about the music and the live auction packages. I’m planning to bid on the Cancun trip myself. And I’m especially grateful to the Union Street Public House for their continual, generous support of Community Lodgings each year.”

The Philadelphia international recording artist The Intruders will headline the live music part of the program, and several local musicians will perform as well. Union Street Public House is once again donating their venue, food and staff. The event includes a dinner buffet and an open bar. Live auction items include a stay in a country cottage near Paris, a Cancun villa that sleeps eight and other adventurous prizes. The program portion includes the presentation of the Christopher M. McMurray Outstanding Program Achievement Award to a family that has excelled in Community Lodgings’ Transitional Housing and/or Youth Education Programs, and recognition of our “Volunteer of the Year.”

The cost per person is $50 in advance, $60 at the door and $40 to Community Lodgings volunteers and young professionals under the age of 40. Tickets can be purchased online or by calling (703) 549-4407. All proceeds will support Community Lodgings’ mission to lift families from homelessness and instability to independence and self-sufficiency.

Santa Claus

There’s still time to see Santa Claus before Christmas Day!

UPDATE (3:40 PM 12/08/2015): Added the Ladyburg event to the list. (H/T Danielle)

Last year when I took my one year old to see Santa, she freaked. I don’t blame her – a large stranger with a huge white beard surrounded by gleaming décor and blaring Christmas music isn’t exactly a calming experience for a baby. When the pictures came out, she looked terrified (so did the poor Santa) but I still bought the over-priced mall photo package because everyone mama needs that classic baby-crying-on-Santa’s-lap photo. If you’re looking to meet the jolly ol’ guy himself, here are a few of his pit stops in the area:

  • Santa will be at Why Not? On December 12th from 12 to 3 pm.
  • He’ll be making an appearance at the Alexandria Holiday Market on December 13th and 20th from 12 to 3 pm.
  • Santa Jack Arthur and Mrs. Claus will be visiting Ladyburg on December 16th from 3- 8 pm.  Professional photography will also be available while visiting with Santa and Mrs. Claus, details at the link.  There is a $15 sitting fee per family to cover LadyBurg’s fee’s for hosting Santa.  Select your time slot for your visit.  You may come anytime during that 1 hour time slot.  Sorry, no personal photography permitted…this includes cell phone pictures.
  • You can always visit St. Nick at the Pentagon City Mall – make sure to make an appointment online to avoid a long wait!
  • Santa and Mrs. Claus will be visiting Union Street Public House (be sure to make reservations online as there are no walk-ins!).
  • For an absolute treat, have a visit from Santa in your home! This $200 package gets you a 30 minute visit with Santa in your home, where he will sing carols, read stories, and play games with your child – all while a professional photographer captures the moment.
  • And finally, there’s nothing more authentically Old Town than seeing the waterskiing Santa on the Potomac on the Eve of Christmas!

Union Street Public House - Alexandria, VA
Union Street Public House gives back to the Alexandria, Virginia community in a number of ways. This year, they are hosting a Christmas lunch for 50 wounded warriors. In war and peace these brave individuals make sacrifices far beyond what most of us appreciate. In the name of freedom, they give up the comfort and convenience of civilian life in order to protect our rights and liberties.

The staff at Union Street is raising money for donations to buy gift cards for these heroes so they can buy what ever they need. The deadline for donating is Monday Dec. 22nd. 2014.

I have donated and if you can, please consider donating too. Click this link to find out more and to donate or click the link in our sidebar to the right –>.
