From last year’s video, members of the Alexandria Police Department give a few safety reminders as children head back-to-school in Alexandria, Virginia next week (Tuesday, September 6, 2016).

Pay attention to school buses. In Austin, TX, the school district released this footage of two students getting hit by cars not stopping for a school bus during the first week of school.

Via the American Red Cross, here are some more good back-to-school safety tips…   (more…)

Kohl’s shopper goes ecstatic over Star Wars Chewbacca Mask

Some time ago, I re-introduced the weekly palate cleanser posts (a.k.a. video of the week) on this blog. During the week, I post about road closures, stores opening, stores closing, news and things to do around Alexandria, Virginia. So, I thought maybe one post during the week could be just for fun. Therefore, a post that will cleanse the palate.

For this week, whether you have had a good week or a bad one, here is a mega-viral live Facebook video from Kohl’s shopper Candace Payne who went absolutely ecstatic over her purchase of a Star Wars Chewbacca mask at Kohl’s.

If you’re on Facebook, you’ve no doubt seen the video in various Facebook feeds. The video has spread so fast that it has now become the most-watched Facebook Live video ever, with 127 million views and counting.

In a video posted to Facebook yesterday morning (see below) which is spreading just as fast, representatives from Kohl’s showed up at Candace’s door and dropped off load of Star Wars toys and stuff for the family. Kohl’s also gave the family $2,500 in Kohl’s gift cards and 10,000 rewards points.

“We don’t want you to have to share your Chewbacca mask, so we ‘confinsctated’ masks for everybody,” the Kohl’s rep told Candace Payne (she used the term ‘confinscated’ in her video).

“We want to thank you for being a loyal Kohl’s shopper,” he told her. “We can’t tell you how much we appreciate that.”

Kudos for Kohl’s for doing the right thing.

What are your thoughts on the 2017 budget for Alexandria, Virginia?

Any Snow or Ice with next week’s winter storm?

Russ Adams, a terrific local meteorologist, who lives in the Del Ray neighborhood of Alexandria, gives his thoughts on a projected winter storm for Alexandria, Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area coming next week (February 15-16) and what may or may not happen with the storm. Will it be a bust like the last one? Will there be snow, ice, none, or both?

Russ runs a fantastic site called Del Ray VA Weather which we link to on the right side of the screen.
